Thomas Betz
Chatterton Award Recipient 1996
The Chatterton Award was received for
"Simulation of Reignition Processes of Vacuum Circuit Breakers
in Series"
Proceedings of the XVIIth ISDEIV, Berkeley, California, vol. I,
pp. 371-375 (1996)
Thomas Betz was born in 1994 in Hanau, Germany. He studied electrical
engineering at the Darmstadt University of Technology, Darmstadt, Germany,
where he received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in 1992. From 1992 to 1997 he worked
as scientific assistant at the High Voltage Laboratory of the Darmstadt
University of Technology, building a medium voltage synthetic test circuit
used as a test device for studying the breaker performance of two vacuum
circuit breakers in series. His interest was focused on the transient breakdown
behavior of the series arrangement appearing in the case one vacuum tube
reignites. Another field of interest was modeling the the reignition
processes considering a model network of the series design in combination
with the synthetic test circuit. At present Thomas Betz is going to receive
his Ph.D. degree. In 1998 he joined ABB Calor Emag Schaltanlagen AG in
Hanau, Germany, working in the field of development of high voltage
circuit breakers and operating mechanisms.
