Gennady A. Mesyats
Dyke Award Recipient 1990
The 1990 Dyke Award is presented to Academician Gennady A. Mesyats for
his pioneering contributions in the field of pulsed vacuum discharge physics.
Academician Mesyats was the first to investigate fast vacuum discharges
using high-voltage nanosecond pulses. He and his colleagues discovered
the phenomenon of explosive electron emission and demonstrated that
it plays a fundamental role in pulsed vacuum discharges and in the operation
of high-current electron diodes. His work has also contributed greatly
to the better understanding of the mechanisms of non-stationary vacuum
arc cathode spots. Academician Mesyats was elected in 1987 as Vice-President
of the USSR (now Russian) Academy of Sciences. He founded two research
Institutes, the Institute of High-Current Electronics in Tomsk, and the
Institute of Electrophysics in Ekaterinburg (formerly Sverdlovsk).
He has authored numerous papers, monographs, and books on various aspects
of vacuum electrical discharges, pulsed power, and electron beam generation.
