Prof. Jimei Wang

Dyke Award Recipient 2006

Prof. Jimei Wang received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Utopia University, Shanghai, China in 1946. He is a professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University China

Professor Wang is a pioneer researcher on vacuum arc theory in China. He found the first research group on vacuum arc theory and their applications in 1958 and developed the first 3 phases 12kV 1500A vacuum switch in China in 1964. He set up a Weil synthetic circuit that was appropriate for 12kV 40kA vacuum circuit breaker test in Xi’an Jiaotong University in 1975. That was a push to development of vacuum switch in China.

Professor Wang educated 2 generations of engineers in the field of vacuum Switch and electric fuse in China. He was one of the first Ph.D. student supervisors authorized by China Academic Commission of state council since 1978, when graduate education system in China was re-established. He was the supervisor of the first Ph.D. supervisor in vacuum arc theory. From then on, 24 students received Ph.D. degree and 23 received M.S. degree under his guidance. His students are playing active roles in vacuum switch field in China or abroad. In 2003, he sponsored a “Jimei Wang Foundation” of RMB 1,000,000 Yuan (about $ 120,000 US dollars) in Xi’an Jiaotong University to encourage M.S. and Ph.D. candidates to perform study on vacuum arc and vacuum switch.

Professor Wang is now active on developing high voltage vacuum circuit breakers in China. He found a research group on high voltage vacuum circuit and the group is  towarding 126kV single breaker vacuum circuit breaker.

Professor Wang has published 410 technical papers and 15 books. He holds 15 Chinese Patents. His professional activities include acting as member of the Permanent International Scientific Committee of the Symposia on Discharges and Electrical Insulation in Vacuum and a scientific member of International Conference on Electric Fuses and their Application. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a senior member of Chinese Electrical Engineering Society and a senior member of Chinese Electric Technical Society.
